3/23/22 Misdirection

College students in 2022

The first time I heard the term “misdirection”, it was related to football. A prime example of misdirection is the “reverse” play, in which the ball is run in one direction and then is handed off to a runner heading in the opposite direction. Effective when run properly, misdirection is a fine tool in the coaches’ playbook.
However, in the media environment today, we are seeing another form of misdirection of the type in which the media covers an emotional story full of striking visuals designed to make the viewer sad, angry or frustrated. Sound familiar? War, pestilence, rioting, “INSURRECTION!” fill our social media streams and fill the screens of our viewing devices. All to get you looking in that direction – all the while, the left continues to undermine the values of America, spend the US into unreasonable debt and destroy the oil industry to impoverish us.
The way to defend against misdirection in life is the same as in football: Keep your eye on the ball.
